Todays ramblings
Good Morning.
I have been telling you about an experiment I had been
doing with GHB on

of Psycho's articles today.
Analysis of Past Results - Why is it so
Important?
To answer this question, we firstly need to explore
some do's and don't's of betting.
It is not good practice to place
random amounts of money on randomly selected horses running in randomly
selected races held at randomly selected courses. We'll see why later. For the
moment, let's just accept this as a fact.
If we are not placing bets
randomly, by definition, we must be using some kind of a system. If we are
using a system, we must stick to it religiously. It is no good just sticking to
the system when we 'feel like it'. Again, for the moment, let's just accept
this as a fact.
It is not only good practice to record bets, and
their outcome, it is crucial to future betting. Again, for the moment, let's
just accept this as a fact. Fortunately, betting exchanges give us a helping
hand here because they record our past bets, their outcome, and allow the
information to be down-loaded to our PCs. To down-load such information, a
spreadsheet, such as Excel, is required. Since, betting exchanges store mainly
financial data, additional information, such as: trainer, jockey, going,
finishing position in race etc., will need to be added to that down-loaded from
the exchanges. The additional information does not need to be collected at race
time since it is available on the Racing Post web site following the race.
OK. So now we have the data relating to our past betting activities. Now
what?
Well, let's suppose that we lose money, or that our winnings
are only modest, when we use our system. Let's also suppose that we decide to
increase our system's profitability.
How could we do this?
Well, we could analyse our past betting activities in order to identify trends.
For example, we may find that our past betting activities were far more
successful at certain tracks than at others, that certain combinations of
trainers and jockeys gave better results than other combinations or that the
better the ground, the better the results were. Who knows what trends we may
discover when we go looking.
Once the trends, associated with our
past betting activities, have been identified, we can use them to modify our
future betting activities. For example, we can avoid those race tracks where we
have been unsuccessful in the past, we can concentrate on the more successful
trainer/jockey combinations and we can only place bets on those days when the
ground is good or better. By doing this, we can reduce losses, increase
winnings and thus improve the profitability of the system.
Now, had
the past results of our betting activities not been recorded, we would not be
able to analyse them and therefore we would be unable to improve the
profitability of the system. However, the analysis of our past results are only
valid and applicable provided that we have used a system in the first place and
have followed it religiously. If our past betting activities have been based
upon purely random acts, then the results of any analysis performed will be
both random and meaningless.
