Todays ramblings Good Morning.
I am going to move the fish to a new pond in another part of the
garden this weekend. I have been digging a bigger hole for them so they have
more room to swim.
Stop at a winner good or bad? I have been betting
for many years in fact I have been writing a daily email about betting since
June 2003.
http://www.horseracingsystemsuk.com/free-daily-nap-directory.htm
I
think you would agree that there is every chance I have a good understanding of
this industry and how to make money from the sports markets.
Well I
hope you do because I am about to write about something that I think is a good
way to make long term profits.
I have used Stop at a Winner for a
number of years and happen to like them because they generally mean early
profits and allow you to do something else once you have won.
If you
are unsure what I mean by Stop at a Winner let me explain a little more.
If you have tried to create your own system, bought one or even used
someone else's selections and if you normally get more than one selection a day
from the source, then you have probably had days when you were in profit after
1 or 2 of the selections have won, only to be out of pocket by the end of the
day because the rest of the selections lost.
This is in fact a classic
with lay selections. Often you will win on most of the selections you have for
the day, only to lose and be out of profit, because just one of the selections
lost later in the day.
So my question is why keep betting once you are
in profit?
The answer I often get to this question is that people
don't like to leave money on the table and want to earn a lot more than one
winning bet can provide. These people often go on to have a really bad losing
day that wipes out all of their profit for the last month and then give up on
the system/service as a loser, when if they had stopped as soon as they were in
profit they would have been fine.
Let's think about this for a moment.
When we talk about betting on the horses or Greyhounds or any other sport, it
is called "Gambling" and the reason for that is that you are trying to either
work with or against the odds of winning, but sooner or later those odds will
catch you up.
In simple terms the way I explain this is "that the
longer you gamble at one time the more likely you are to find a loser or number
of losers" which will put paid to your profit, when stopping at the first
winner could make far more profit longer term.
Now as I mentioned many
people do not like using Stop at a Winner because they feel that they will be
less profitable, but what we generally find with these people is that they are
have not made any (or very little profit) from gambling and most of the time
they have tried system after system, service after service and still not found
anything that works for them. So it seems a little strange that people
would knock something that although may not give them big returns (unlikely
anyway), would give them consistent returns over time.
I think the
real secret to using stop at a winner is getting your stop loss correct so that
when things do go wrong, you won't lose too much and you can carry on where you
left off.
Unfortunately this is where most people go wrong. When it
comes to using the stop at a winner idea, you have do your homework and make
sure that you have a stop loss amount that not only allows you to keep betting
during the normal win/lose sequence of a system/tips, but stop's you before
your loses get out of hand, when something goes wrong.
