Todays ramblings
Good Morning.
Yesterday we discussed using Adrian Massey’s online database to help
create a our new low priced lay system.
When using a database like this you must keep in mind that any data you
pull out will be based on SP, so if you are using a partially price
sensitive system (as we are) it is important to carry out a lot of
testing on live racing before you use it.
Let’s start looking at some of the categories that you can choose from.
Select Favourite or Other
Although I prefer to just check “Clear Favourite” I always re-test using
“Joint/Co Favourite” because I find a lot of favourites that you may
select from the RacingPost actually go off jf.
Time Selection.
Years
Adrian’s data goes back 9 years to 1997, but to be honest I wouldn’t
use anything earlier than 2003. Training methods are improving all the
time and I would argue that owners are more sophisticated and better
to judge the races they enter their horses in, so you may find going
further back may give you false information.
Anyway most of the time a couple of years is all you need to see if you
are on the right track, testing on live races is going to be the
ultimate test!
Month.
You shouldn’t ignore this category, remember racing is broken up into
seasons and although you get Jump and AW races in the summer the
majority of runners are on the flat. So I would suggest only using the
months of the main season that you are testing for.
Day of the Week.
Most people know that I don’t bet at weekends and I have always felt
that racing on Saturday and Sunday seems to produce different results.
This is probably subjective but it is how I feel, so I tend to remove
these two days from the selection process, you may feel differently.
Race Selection
Race Distance
I always leave all selections ticked until I see the results, then you
may be able to use this as a filter.
Race Type
In this case we are creating a jump system so we want all (national
Hunt) ticked and (flat) not ticked.
Number of runners in race
To start with we leave all these ticked, again could be useful as a
filter once we look at some results.
Going
I must admit I tend to ignore this for my main systems, going can
change throughout the day, but you may wish to include it.
AW standard and Slow is the one that gets a lot of people. You can not
use AW Slow because you will not know if it was, until after the race!
